Lanzhou University Triumphs Again with Top Honors

On April 21, 2024, the curtain fell on the 5th National Collegiate Municipal Environmental Innovation and Practical Ability Competition, co-hosted by Harbin Institute of Technology and Tongji University, and jointly organized by Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Beijing Normal University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Lanzhou University. Under the guidance of Professor Cheng Xiuwen and Teacher Liu Qin from the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lanzhou University, the team named "Harbin Highlights Viewing Team" consisting of students Liu Xiangrui, Liu Fangtong, and Chen Yutong, clinched the national top award once again. Both Cheng Xiuwen and Liu Qin received the "Gold Medal Instructor" award, marking another record-setting achievement for our university in this competition.

The national finals were held on April 20, 2024, on Sun Island in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The "Harbin Highlights Viewing Team" from our university first presented their sewage treatment plant design. Following the presentation, the panel of expert judges questioned the team on project design choices, innovative concepts for water treatment facilities, and detailed engineering drawings. Armed with solid practical results and professional knowledge, the team members responded convincingly and coherently, earning high praise from the judges for their overall performance. Facing strong competitors from major universities nationwide, our students displayed composure under pressure and performed exceptionally well, demonstrating their outstanding capabilities and team spirit. Supported by the high priority placed on the competition by the school, the team won the top group award.

According to the competition organizers, the 5th National Collegiate Municipal Environmental Innovation and Practical Ability Competition focuses on fostering and delivering talent in environmental science and technology innovation. It emphasizes the ability to analyze and judge knowledge, communicate effectively, and solve complex engineering problems, providing a platform for innovative practice and skill exchange among environmental science and technology talents from universities nationwide. The event aims to enhance education and creativity through competition. This competition established a national platform for innovative practice exchange in municipal environmental disciplines, integrating practical education with industry needs, and promoting high-quality development in the national water affairs sector.

The competition consisted of regional qualifiers and a final round, attracting participation from 869 teams and over 3,000 students from 239 universities including Lanzhou University, Tongji University, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Northwest A&F University, and Sun Yat-sen University, making it one of the largest municipal environmental competitions in China. The regional qualifiers took place between November and December 2023, selecting 83 teams to advance to the first round of the national finals. After further evaluation, 27 teams comprising 51 participants progressed to the second round of finals in Harbin for the top national award. On May 14, 2023, Lanzhou University's team first stood on the national stage of the Collegiate Municipal Environmental Innovation and Practical Ability Competition and won the top group award. This year, the team from Lanzhou University has once again excelled and stepped onto the winners' podium. Inspired by our consecutive victories, our school will continue to explore innovations and enhance its performance, striving for further success in national competitions, bringing honor to our university, and contributing more outstanding talents to society!
